People avoid the dentist for many reasons. Cost, residual fear from childhood, our always too-busy-lives: these can all get in the way of scheduling that appointment. In addition, people may feel that their hygiene routine isn’t as perfect as it should be—a fact they are unwilling to share with their practitioner.

The Shame Cycle

Unfortunately, a missed appointment—or an imperfect hygiene routine—can trigger a vicious cycle. Embarrassed patients may feel reluctant to get the help they need, compounding the problem. Perhaps these patients have encountered over-zealous practitioners in their past. Many older patients remember the dreaded “lecture” that accompanied visits to the dentist. Dentists or hygienists may have taken the idea of “help” too far, scolding their patients with statements like “You really need to floss every day” or “I can see that you don’t care enough about your teeth.” While well-intentioned, such statements prompt shame—& the memory now keeps patients away from the dentist office.

No Shame-Dentist

A good dentist will never shame or judge you. Your dentist should be someone who encourages you on your journey to better oral & overall health, not someone who makes you feel bad about the past. Of course, education is an important part of a dental visit. It is our duty to let you know about treatment options & to explain their risks & benefits. More broadly, your overall oral health is our responsibility. Since educating patients on dental hygiene is key to preventing cavities, gum disease & other oral health issues, it is our job to give you the information you need to take care of your teeth. It is not our job, however, to present this information in a way that is patronizing, belittling or shaming.
