Restorative Dentistry

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is a type of dentistry which uses leading-edge materials and technology to address the health of the entire mouth so it will function properly for years to come without frequent visits to your dentist. Our restorative dentist, Dr. Hibret Hailu Benjamin, repairs cracked or missing teeth and replaces old mercury fillings, ill-fitting or failing crowns and old composites that have become discolored or dysfunctional. It also means restoring implants for missing teeth. When more than a few teeth are missing, partials and dentures are sometimes needed as well.

While restorative dentistry means so many things, we like to think about it as restoring your mouth to optimal health. We do this with the use of teeth cleanings, fillings and implants to replace missing teeth, crowns and veneers with the most advanced dental technology available today. As a leading San Francisco Dentist, Dr. Hibret Hailu Benjamin continues to stay current with her continuing education. By doing so, she is able to offer you a great service with restorative dentistry.

At Marina Tooth Fairy, we are concerned not only with our patients’ oral health, but also with your overall health and quality of life. Patients receive dental care in the comfort of our clean, contemporary office where they enjoy amenities including valet parking, televisions, wi-fi access, hot scented towels and blankets, noise canceling headphones, and a beverage station.

  • INLAY/ON-LAY

    Inlay/On-lay

An inlay is similar to a filling and lies inside the cusp tips of the tooth. They are custom-made to fit the prepared cavity and are then cemented into place. An on-lay is a more extensive reconstruction that covers one or more cusps of a tooth. On-lays are indicated in situations where a substantial reconstruction is required. However, more of the tooth structure can be conserved compared to the placement of a crown.

To repair damage to the tooth’s biting surface, rather than using a simple filling, or a crown, Dr. Benjamin will often use an inlay, or an on-lay. Inlays and on-lays can be made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin, although porcelain is now becoming the material of choice because of its strength and potential to match the natural color of your tooth.

  • ROOT CANAL THERAPY

    ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Occasionally, a tooth will have extensive decay (cavity) or pressure sensitivity when biting that affects the nerve of the tooth In addition, the tooth may have moderate to severe pain from hot and cold liquids. When this occurs, the nerve of the tooth has become infected. The treatment for this involves removing the nerve from the tooth- “root canal therapy”. The area is then filled with a rubber-based material. This treatment can be completed in 1-2 visits and in most cases relieves the symptoms of pain.

Since the nerve and blood supply is removed when a root canal is performed, the tooth is susceptible to fracture. Therefore, the tooth will need to be protected with a crown (see crown and bridge section).

If a root canal is not performed, the tooth will continue to degenerate and the infection will continue to grow. The tooth will eventually need to be removed. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our office for a consultation to review your options.

Other alternatives: dental implant, bridge, or removable partial denture
